1. Jog-A-Thon is approaching quickly!  The date is set for March 22….we are very excited about this years event and more information will be coming your way soon. If you are interested in volunteering for the event please contact Catherine Beeny catbeeny@gmail.com.  As most of you remember the students turned Mr. Pace into a human sundae after meeting our goal…..what will he be this year?
2. AWISH (Around the World in Santiago Hills), our cultural event is planned and that committee is meeting monthly.  If you are interested in representing a country or learning more about the event please contact Samila Ardalan ardalanfamily@yahoo.com.  We are also in need of donations that can be used in a silent auction; if you can help please contact Samila.
3. Yearbook – It’s that time of year!  We need help in creating pages in the yearbook.  The process is simple and can be done from your home computer.  We are also in need of photographs of different events that have happened during the school year or are happening.  Please contact Jeanne Clymer jeanetteclymer@iusd.org  if you can help!
4. BOX TOPS- Please remember to turn in your Box Tops, we get a bunch of cash.
5. I hope you all had a great winter break! I wanted to update you all on a few events that are coming up in the next few months.

1. The ACE Program begins again on Wednesday January 16 and we are still in need of volunteers to assist with the program. If your child is enrolled in this session please consider volunteering as you will receive a discount on enrollment. The responsibilities include checking students in and out of the classes. Please contact me if you are interested or if you have any questions.
2. The Jog-A-thon is scheduled for Friday March 15, 2013. Be on the lookout for more information coming soon! If you are interested in volunteering or getting involved with the committee please contact Catherine Beeny catbeeny@gmail.com.

   If you or your company has the ability to donate prizes we would love to talk to you.

3. The AWISH committee is also in the planning stages for our big event in June. For those of you who are new to our school AWISH, (Around the World In Santiago Hills), is our annual cultural celebration where countries represented by our Santiago Hills Families get to share a flavor of their country or heritage. Last year we had approximately 20 countries represented with food, music and crafts. If you are interested in learning more about the festival or getting involved there is a meeting this Friday January 11 at 8:20 in the music room. 4. We have a PTA General Meeting scheduled for January 23 at noon in the MPR. We hope you can join us as we will have discussions about proposed PTA projects.

I wanted to share a few updates with you all….

1. I am happy to announce that with your donations our pledge drive has reached $32,000! Thank you all so much for supporting our school. We are having a general meeting on January 22 to share how money will be spent. You are welcome to attend, details about the meeting will be sent as we get closer to the date. We are still accepting donations, you can donate here.
2. Our restaurant fundraiser at California Pizza Kitchen generated $353.35! We had an amazing turnout. We will be scheduling another one in the new year!
3. We had Red Ribbon Week in October and our results were awesome. We collected $1,391 in silver and $326 in pennies. Thank you for your support!
4. The book fair is scheduled for March! We will keep you posted on the details!
5. The ACE program begins again in January. We need volunteers to help us support the program. As a volunteer you receive a discount in the ACE program when your child is enrolled and the requirements include checking students in and out of class. Please contact me for more information. This is a terrific program for extended learning and only works with your support. Thank you!

As we end the first trimester of the school year I want to thank you all for your support and for all of the volunteer hours! Happy Holidays to you all and best wishes for a very happy new year!

Here are a few notes from your PTA….

1. A huge thank you for your continued support of our pledge drive! We are currently at $29,800! We are still taking pledge drive donations the information is available here. Thank you Anne Sodhi and Francesca Giessmann for all that you have done to make this pledge drive a success!
2. Spirit wear has been ordered and we should receive our order in approximately 4-6 weeks! Thanks to Brigitte Holmdahl and Sabari Kumar for being our spirit wear co-chairs!
3. If you are interested in ordering a yearbook now is the time to order it to receive the yearbook at a reduced price of $19. Order forms are available in the office. Early bird prices expire 11/16.
4. Thank you to all who have signed up for a PTA membership. There is still time to sign up, membership forms are available in the office or click here to download the forms. The Kona Ice truck will be on campus on Monday October 29 right after school. Mr. Pace will be announcing the winners of the 2 classes with the highest percentage shortly and each student in those two classes will receive a free Kona Ice treat! Thank you to Jeanne Klimon for leading this very important responsibility.
5. Student Directories will be out soon! Thank you so much to Shirley Gao and Claudia Schapiro for co-chairing this huge project! We are hoping that the printer will have them ready for distribution next week, if not you will see them the week after.
6. Red Ribbon Week has been so much fun! Thanks to you all for your daily coin donations, and thanks also to those who helped count the change every morning! Thanks to Claudia Schapiro for being our Red Ribbon Leader. Thank you also to our Girl Scout troops for the red ribbon decorations!
7. Thank you to all who participated in the PTA Reflctions Program- I am so impressed by the amazing talent that was submitted by our students! Thank you and good luck! Thank you to Alison Palidichuk for leading the PTA Reflections Program. The Reflections Program runs on a very short timeframe and she made it look effortless.

And finally a huge thank you to Catherine Beeny for updating our website and to Yang Xu and Tanchi Fu for supporting our website. Our goal is to have everything you need on the PTA website.

The History of Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week started in 1986 when members of the National Federation of Parents for Drug-Free Youth wore red ribbons to honor Enrique Camarena, a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent, who was kidnapped and killed in 1985 while trying to keep America safe from drugs.

In 1988, the Congress of the United States proclaimed the first national red ribbon week. The goal they set forth was, “No use of illegal drugs; no illegal use of legal drugs.”

Pennies for Prevention & Other Silver Coins

During Red Ribbon Week bring in your pennies (silver coin is also welcome) each morning. All coins will be weighed daily. Nickels, dimes and quarters will be converted to their penny pound equivalent (i.e. 1 quarter will equal 25 pennies in weight, etc.). Daily prizes will be awarded to the upper and lower grade classes with the most coins donated. There will be two Grand Prizes (one for the lower grades and one for the upper grades) that will be awarded at the end of the week for the most pounds collected by a classroom.

Monday, October 22 – Pledge Card Signing & Wristband Day

Tuesday, October 23 – Rockin’ Red Day

Everyone should wear as much red as possible. A school-wide photo will be taken.

Wednesday, October 24 – Wear Your Shirt Backwards Day

This act represents the students’ commitments to turning their backs on drugs.

Thursday, October 25 – Teaming Up Against Drugs Day

Students should wear their favorite sports team clothing and memorabilia.

Friday, October 26 – Spirit Wear Day

Students should wear Santiago Hills spirit wear. The “Pennies for Prevention” Grand Prize winners will be announced!

Just a few additional notes for this week:

1. I am so happy to share that our current pledge drive donations total $25,000! Our goal this year is $40,000 so we are more than halfway there! Thank you for your donations. Our pledge drive continues and any amount is welcome. You can send in your check with your child or we have a PayPal option online as well. Thank you so much for supporting our school.

2. Information about Reflections, the National PTA’s arts recognition and achievement program, will be included in your packet this week. Please review carefully as there are specific due dates that need to be met if your child is interested in participating. 3 There is still opportunity to enroll in the ACE program. specifically in Sports Sampler, Motorized Building, Color me Mine and Drumming and Dancing. We are also in need of ACE class monitors.
